New Generation Photography Award Winners
Luther Konadu, Ethan Murphy and Zinnia Naqvi are the winners of the New Generation Photography Award.
Their work shares concerns with identity and heritage, as explored through themes of gender, race and place.
The award was set up by the Canadian Photography Institute, part of the National Gallery of Canada, to support emerging artists aged 30 and under who create lens-based work.
An exhibition by the winners will be on view at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto from May 1 to June 9 as part of the Contact Photography Festival
As well, some images will be shown in PhotoLab 6: The New Generation Photography Award Exhibition at the National Gallery from Sept. 27 to March 22.
Kondu, based in Winnipeg, is a photographer, writer and content creator for the online publication Public Parking. His studio projects are realized through photographic print media and painting.
Murphy, a photographer in St. John’s, Nfld., links identity and place by reflecting on the psychological impact of the province's rural environment.
Naqvi is a visual artist based in Montreal. Her work combines photography, video, writing, archival footage and installation. She questions the relationship between authenticity and narrative, while dealing with themes of post-colonialism, cultural translation, language and gender.
