New Leadership at Remai Modern
Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh will join Remai Modern later this year as co-executive director and CEO.
The Canadian/Swedish duo were chosen for their work leading major cultural institutions and their extensive experience as curators, the Remai said Wednesday.
“Aileen and Johan are innovators with a growing reputation for their unique and collaborative approach to museum management,” said Doug Matheson, the gallery's board chair. “In addition to their respected work as curators, they bring valuable strategic, financial, human resources and fundraising background to the organization.”
Burns and Lundh most recently led the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre in New Zealand as co-director and chief curator.
The duo said they are impressed with the Remai's vision and ambition.
"We identify strongly with the artist-centred spirit of Remai Modern, the commitment to reimagining Modernisms, and dynamic collections development. We look forward to furthering its impacts, achievements and reputation.
“Writing from the kitchen table during our sixth week in a small cottage in New Plymouth, New Zealand, we’re dreaming of the moment when we can gather again and be nourished by art and build a new life with the community in Saskatoon."
Lynn McMaster will continue to lead the museum on an interim basis until mid-summer.
Burns is a Canadian curator and writer from Toronto. She earned a Master of Arts in critical and curatorial studies from New York's Columbia University in 2010. Lundh is a Swedish curator, writer and translator. He holds a Master’s degree in fine arts from the Konstfack University College in Sweden.
Burns and Lundh have served as co-directors of the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane and the Centre for Contemporary Art in Derry-Londonderry in Northern Ireland.
