It’s official—a new community museum for North Vancouver is coming to Lower Lonsdale.
On December 12th, City of North Vancouver Council voted to approve a new 16,000 sq. ft. museum within the City-owned community amenity facility at 131 West Esplanade. It will be situated in the retail/residential complex called ‘Promenade at the Quay’ being developed by Polygon Homes. In addition to the City of North Vancouver’s provision of the facility, $2.555 million has been pledged by the City and an investment of $3 million made by the Government of Canada. The building project will be managed by the City of North Vancouver. Community donations will be sought from individuals, businesses, foundations, and the Friends of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Society to enhance the museum’s exhibits.
The museum is slated to open in 2019.
Victor Elderton, Chair of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Commission, expressed appreciation for Council’s decision saying, “This marks the culmination of many years of work by successive Councils to find a new home for the museum. The museum’s location across from Lonsdale Quay and the new Polygon Gallery could not be better. “The federal contribution to the project, is an exciting investment in the future of our community,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, MP for North Vancouver. “It will create a unique 21st century museum and gathering place where we’ll experience and celebrate the stories that connect us as a community.”
“The museum will showcase North Vancouver’s vibrant community history in a custom-built, new facility where residents and visitors can connect with the many stories that inform our present and future,” said Darrell Mussatto, Mayor of the City of North Vancouver.
Nancy Kirkpatrick, Director of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives, thanked Mayor Mussatto and City Council, volunteers, Commissioners, Friends Society Directors, and staff who have worked on the new museum project over the years. “NVMA is looking forward to consulting with the community in planning new exhibits and we’re delighted to be working with both the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations through our new Aboriginal Voices partnership.”
The North Vancouver Museum and Archives brings community history to life through its many services, programs and exhibits. The new North Vancouver Museum will be a place for connection and discovery – slated to become a community gathering spot – and will contribute to the exciting revitalization of the Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood and Shipyards area.
