The Remai Modern has opened a new show of Picasso linocuts titled Pablo Picasso: Process and Poetry that runs until March 3.
Gregory Burke, the Remai's director, says the work is pulled from the gallery's extensive Picasso collection.
“This is the most significant display of Picasso works since our opening exhibition, Field Guide, and offers viewers a new range of works that are playful, buoyant and offer insight into a legendary artist’s practice.”
The show, curated by Sandra Fraser, explores the theme of the bacchanalia, an ancient Roman festival celebrating Bacchus, the god of wine.
“The linocuts in this exhibition are some of the most gorgeous prints we have," says Fraser. "The bold colours and expressiveness of the figures are remarkable. Our collection is distinct in that it also includes working proofs that offer intimate insight into Picasso’s creative process. These works have rarely been exhibited.”
Picasso explored linocut techniques in the final decades of his life.
The exhibition also includes ceramic works by Picasso being shown at the Remai for the first time.
