New Public Art by Hank Willis Thomas Unveiled in Vancouver
Hank Willis Thomas, “Duality,” “Nexus” and “Strike”
Three works by American artist Hank Willis Thomas have been unveiled in Vancouver as part of the Vancouver Art Gallery's Offsite art space program.
Thomas's works, Duality, Nexus and Strike, are on view now through April 27, 2025 at 1100 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, between Thurlow and Bute Streets, just west of the Shangri–La Hotel.
The Vancouver exhibition marks the first time that three of Thomas’ polished stainless-steel sculptures will be exhibited together.
Originally trained as a photographer, Thomas makes work that encourages viewers to question stereotypics and commercial representations. Strike, for instance, is based on Strike Scene, a lithograph by a Ukrainian-American artist named Louis Lozowick that shows a confrontation between a worker and a person in an authority position. “Thomas has isolated a single element from the print — one hand stopping another’s swing of a baton — transforming this disembodied gesture into a large-scale sculpture,” according to the news release.
Offsite — a place for Canadian and international artists to exhibit work related to their urban surroundings — is the Vancouver Art Gallery's outdoor public art space program; it is organized by the gallery on behalf of the City of Vancouver's public art program. This year marks the program's 15th year.
