Multi-coloured LED lights on the exterior façade of the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver are part of a new art installation, Reckless, by Kevin Schmidt.
The installation has an illumination sequence timed to a soundtrack Schmidt composed based on the 1984 album Reckless by Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams, a longtime resident of North Vancouver.
Schmidt’s soundtrack can be heard on the building’s outdoor speakers or by tuning into 87.8 on FM radio.
Schmidt is building on previous work, including Sentimental Tower (2013), in which he outfitted his Fogo Island, Nfld., studio in Christmas lights borrowed from locals, and EDM House (2014), in which he covered a rural farm homestead with Christmas lights and synched them to self-written electronic dance music.
Reckless draws inspiration from a sub-genre of elaborate do-it-yourself Christmas light displays on suburban houses timed to heavy metal soundtracks.
Schmidt, who was born in Ottawa and is now based in British Columbia, had a major solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery last year. He is represented by Catriona Jeffries in Vancouver.
Reckless is on view daily from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. until March 10, 2019.
