New Triennial to Launch in Toronto in September
The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto will launch the inaugural Greater Toronto Art Triennial exhibition, Greater Toronto Art 2021, on Sept. 29.
This triennial's first edition, which brings together 21 artists and art collectives working in Greater Toronto, is organized by guest curator Daisy Desrosiers, adjunct curator Rui Mateus Amaral, and MOCA's artistic director, November Paynter.
The line-up includes Ashoona Ashoona and Alexa Hatanaka, Ghazaleh Avarzamani, Nour Bishouty, Jesse Chun, Tom Chung, Common Accounts – Igor Bragado and Miles Gertler, Julia Dault, Azza El Siddique, Kareem-Anthony Ferreira, Aaron Jones, Pamila Matharu, Native Art Department International – Maria Hupfield and Jason Lujan, Oluseye, Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, Jagdeep Raina, Tony Romano, Jennifer Rose Sciarrino, Walter Scott, Kara Springer, Sahar Te, the collective of Parastoo Anoushahpour, Faraz Anoushahpour and Ryan Ferko.
MOCA said the exhibition marks its renewed focus on the local art scene and offers support for artists to realize new and expanded work. The show will span all three floors of the museum with a range of media, including drawing, sculpture, performance, painting and video.
MOCA's executive director, Kathleen Bartels, says the show "addresses the ever-expanding notion of what Toronto is and might become, and how creative practices and attitudes are being innovated here."
