Union House Arts is the winner of the 2023 Lacey Prize.
The prize was announced Wednesday by the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) and the Lacey Family.
The Newfoundland-based arts centre wins $50,000 and a site visit from an NGC contemporary art curator, who will also do studio visits with artists in the region.
Launched in 2019, the Lacey Prize is awarded biennially to an artist-run centre or community gallery in Canada. It is funded through a gift from Dr. John Lacey and his late wife Naomi, and it is supported by the National Gallery of Canada Foundation.
“I have loved visual art since my teens and believe that small community galleries are the glue that holds the visual art world together,” said Dr. John Lacey in the news release. “The Lacey Prize is to encourage those galleries and to help the winners do even more for their artists and communities.”
Union House Arts is a community art space in Port Union, Newfoundland and Labrador. Committed to supporting new work by artists and craftspeople, it was founded in 2016 and opened its doors three years later, in June 2019.
The jury also gave honourable mentions to three other centres: Pumice Raft and SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) in Toronto, Ontario, as well as Oxygen Art Centre in Nelson, British Columbia.
