Matthew Hills
The Grenfell Art Gallery has announced that Matthew Hills has been appointed Director. Matthew joins Grenfell Campus and Memorial University of Newfoundland from the University of Alberta Museums, where he managed and curated the University of Alberta Art Collection for the past 5 years.
“I am very excited to be a part of Grenfell Campus and the Corner Brook community. I look forward to working with my colleagues at Grenfell and Memorial University to continue to enrich the vibrant cultural community in Newfoundland and Labrador through the visual arts. Our gallery will continue to engage current conversations in our communities, while we seek to spark new ones by challenging ourselves and our audiences” said Matthew Hills.
Founded in 1988, the Grenfell Art Gallery is a public art gallery located on the second floor of the Fine Arts Building on the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Grenfell Art Gallery is committed to cultivating a radical engagement with art through exhibiting, researching, collecting, and nurturing innovative cultural practices. The gallery engages in collaborative partnerships with like-minded local, regional, national and international artists, organizations and institutions.
Matthew earned a Master of Arts in Critical and Curatorial Studies from the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver. He has curated projects at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Modern Fuel, and Belkin Satellite, among other spaces. Previous to the University of Alberta, he was Administrative Coordinator at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre at Queen's University and Curatorial Assistant at the Vancouver Art Gallery. He is the past Program Chair and board member for Nuit Blanche Edmonton and a founding board member of the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning in Kingston Ontario. His writing has been published in Border Crossings, Muse, BlackFlash, Galleries West, and Syphon.
Hills replaces Charlotte Jones, Grenfell Art Gallery Director since 2009, who retired from her position.
