Maegen Black has left her longtime position as executive director of the Canadian Craft Federation to become associate dean of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in Fredericton. Black, a graduate of OCAD University in Toronto, is a writer and curator who taught periodically at the college while advocating for the craft sector.
The University of British Columbia is hiring a director/curator for the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery. "The Belkin is dedicated to equity, social justice, criticism and curating," the university said. "This is a unique opportunity for a director/curator embedded in the world of contemporary art to bring diverse experience, background and perspectives to UBC." Charlottetown's Art in the Open, a two-week festival culminating in a main event on Aug. 27, brings contemporary art into public and outdoor spaces. The lively, community-based event features a kinetic sculptural work, Extinction, by island-based artist Gerald Beaulieu. The hand-carved sculpture, previously shown at the Bonavista Biennale in Newfoundland and Labrador, depicts the skeletal remains of a dinosaur drinking from an oil barrel.
Art Now, Saskatchewan’s Fine Art Fair, will run from Sept. 22 to Sept. 25 in Saskatoon. Artist talks will feature Anne Brochu Lambert, Myra Clarke and Jeffrey Taylor. Other events will be announced closer to the fall. Read more here.
Toronto’s Yorkville Murals, an annual three-day celebration of public art, will be held Aug. 20 to Aug. 28. The event builds on Yorkville’s reputation as an enclave of Toronto’s early art scene. Along with the creation of murals, watch for panel discussions and movie screenings.
Nuit Blanche is returning to Toronto on Oct. 1. Exhibition sites are expanding to North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough. Exhibitors include Anna Binta Diallo, Caroline Monnet, Couzyn van Heuvelen, Cheryl L'Hirondelle, James Nizan, Jordan Bennett, Ken Lum and many others.
MacEwan University in Edmonton is displaying mural cubes on the campus lawn until the end of summer. Alumni AJA Louden, a well-known muralist, mentored three students – Akram, Cristine Jimenez and Jaqueline Ohm – as they created work on the theme of "community lifts us up." Check it out here.
