The Art Canada Institute is launching $30,000 fellowships to support research into under-represented Canadian artists and groups. In May, five people will be admitted to the program, called the Redefining Canadian Art History Fellowship. It includes a mentorship component, and will last one year. Potential areas of research include First Nations, Métis and Inuit art, African Canadian art, and Asian Canadian art. Vancouver's Eastside Culture Crawl is celebrating its 25th anniversary with open studios and online events. Two consecutive weekends, Nov. 12 to Nov. 14 and Nov. 18 to Nov. 21, will see in-person tours at over 400 artist studios. On the first weekend, studio tours are by appointment only. On the second weekend, no appointments are required. The Crawl's website will feature digital programming, including virtual studio tours and artist livestreams. Check out the action here.
C Magazine and the Indigenous Curatorial Collective are launching a new award for Indigenous arts writers. The winner of the Indigenous Art Writing Award will have an article published in C Magazine. As well, the winner will receive $1,500 and a spot in this winter's Momus Emerging Critics Residency, led by artist and writer Léuli Eshrāghi for an Indigenous cohort. Two runners-up will also have their articles published in the magazine, and will receive $1,000 and a two-year subscription. To apply, submit a text of up to 2,000 words about an artist, project, exhibition, performance or other arts-related happening. The deadline is Nov. 21. Find submission details here.
VIVO media arts centre in Vancouver is welcoming Manuel Axel Strain to its leadership, staff and programming team. Strain is a non-binary two-spirit Indigenous artist from the lands and waters of the xʷməθkʷəyəm (Musqueam), Simpcw and Syilx peoples. Strain, an artist, attended Emily Carr University of Art and Design, but prioritizes Indigenous epistemologies.
