The West Vancouver Art Museum has appointed Alison Powell as assistant curator. Powell has previously worked at the Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia, the Richmond Art Gallery and the Belkin Gallery in Vancouver.
Lens-based work from the 2020 and 2021 winners of the New Generation Photography Award is on display at the National Gallery of Canada until Dec. 5. The $10,000 award is given annually to lens-based artists aged 35 and under. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 exhibition was postponed until this year. The winners include Katherine Takpannie, Curtiss Randolph, Noah Friebel, Chris Donovan, Dainesha Nugent-Palache and Dustin Brons.
Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre in Edmonton has unveiled a new mural by Kenneth Lavallee on its south wall. The green, white, yellow and blue design looks like a pixelated ripple in a pond. Lavallee says, “as a millennial Métis man, I’ve made it my objective to advance ways of thinking about Métis art in the 21st century.” He named the mural Ociciwan, and says, “up close it’s hard to see the bigger picture, but from a distance it becomes clear that you yourself can become the genesis of the currents, one of many ‘making waves’ if you will, that can have ripple effects for generations to come.”
The B.C. Achievement Foundation has announced the winners of this year’s Carter Wosk Applied Art and Design awards. The award recognizes excellence in applied arts. Recipients include ceramicist Janaki Larsen, furniture designer Nicholas Purcell and textile designer Elen Danielle, who received the foundation’s new Judson Beaumont Emerging Artist designation. Ann McLaren was named the 2021 award of distinction laureate to honour her career craniofacial prosthetics.
The Most Beautiful Art Tour in Alberta has announced four foothills galleries and four private art studios will be opening their doors on Nov. 27 and Nov. 28 for self-guided holiday tours. Participating galleries include the Leighton Art Centre, Lineham House Galleries, the Okotoks Art Gallery and Bluerock Gallery. Also included are Mady Thiel-Kopstein’s studio, Eversfield Ceramics, Kristoferson Studio and Firebrand Glass Studio.
