A Halifax couple has discovered their beloved Maud Lewis painting is a fraud. The painting was purchased for more than $5,000 through Levis Auctions in Calgary 16 years ago, according to a CBC News report. But a recent appraisal revealed that the painting was a fake, one of possibly more than 1,000 counterfeit Maud Lewis paintings. Trinity Square Video – an artist run centre in Toronto – has announced the five winners of its Emerging Digital Artists Award. The winners are Aljumaine Gayle, Erin Konsmo, Katelyn Hawley, Olivia Dreisinger and Shonee. The jury received 175 submissions from across the country. Each winner receives $5,000 and a one-year production membership with Trinity Square Video. Their work will be featured in a group exhibition at Trinity Square Video and online from Sept. 10 to Oct. 2. Five honourable mentions went to Ayam Yaldo, Christina Hajjar, Enna Kim, Ethan Lyric and Marissa Sean Cruz, who each received $1,000.
The Capture Photography Festival is partnering with Emily Carr University to provide a course that culminates in a feature exhibition of student work during next year's festival. Capture director Emmy Lee Wall will mentor students over the course of a semester, along with other visiting curators and Emily Carr faculty member Birthe Piontek. “Working with Birthe and Emmy toward a featured exhibition with Capture represents a unique chance for students to experience the full arc of developing work for professional public exhibition – a truly exciting step for students on their journey to launching their careers as exhibiting artists,” says Kyla Mallett, dean of the faculty of art.
The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity has announced two in-person visual arts residencies, the first since the pandemic started. The 2D residency is open for submissions until Sept. 22, and will take place during November. The program is designed for artists with an exhibition and publication record, who have completed formal training or have equivalent experience. A second artist residency, for 2D and 3D artists, will take place from Jan. 10 to Feb. 11. Submissions are due Oct. 13.
The Capture Photography Festival's call for submissions for next year's festival in Vancouver will open on Sept. 13. Exhibition and event proposals are due before Oct. 15 through the online submission platform. Exhibition proposals have a $25 fee, while event proposals are free.
