A new exhibition featuring the work of Ningiukulu Teevee has opened at Canada House in London, England.
Organized by the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq with the High Commission of Canada in the UK, Ningiukulu Teevee: Stories from Kinngait is on view now through June 1.
It includes 26 artworks from the renowned Inuk artist. Based in Kinngait, Nunavut, Teevee is known for her retellings of traditional Inuit stories and her depictions of Arctic animals.
Dr. Darlene Coward Wight has curated the exhibition from the Cholakis Dental Group’s Inuit Art in Practice collection, the world’s largest corporate collection of Teevee’s work.
“Ningiukulu Teevee is a passionate chronicler of stories from the past and the present, which sometimes meet in her work in surprising ways,” says Wight.
“Her visual vocabulary combines a bold graphic style with narrative underpinnings of Inuit folklore and legends. This results in artworks that preserve a treasured history while forming a significant contribution to Canadian contemporary art.”
An expanded exhibition of Ningiukulu Teevee: Stories from Kinngait will open at WAG-Qaumajuq in fall 2025.
Last year, Teevee was the winner of the Inuit Art Foundation’s $20,000 biennial Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award (KAMA). Her work is in public and private collections around the world, including more than 40 group exhibitions and 10 solo shows.
