Nominations Open for 2022 Sobey Art Award
Nominations are open for the 2022 Sobey Art Award, one of Canada's most generous prizes for contemporary artists with a total pot of $400,000 in prize money.
Founded in 2002, the award is funded by the Sobey Art Foundation and organized by the National Gallery of Canada.
The overall winner will take home $100,000, while the other four artists on the short list each receive $25,000. The 20 remaining artists on the long list get $10,000 each.
The five finalists will be featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada, with the winner announced at a gala in the fall.
The award was established 20 years ago by the late Donald Sobey, father of the current foundation chair, Rob Sobey.
“Last year, the award received a record number of nominations, and we are excited to officially open this year’s call for nominations to contemporary artists of all ages, and from every region in the country,” Sobey said.
Nominations are open until 6 p.m. on March 25 and can be made by recognized agents, artists and institutions.
An independent jury of curators from Canada’s five regions – Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, the Prairies and the North, and the West Coast and Yukon – as well as an international juror, will oversee the selection process.
Past winners have included Brian Jungen, Annie Pootoogook, Nadia Myre, Ursula Johnson, Kipwani Kiwanga and Stephanie Comilang. Last year’s winner was Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory.
