The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg is closed due to health restrictions to stem the second-wave surge of COVID-19, but special lights in the iconic building are shining forth.
The museum switched on what it calls "northern lights" – created by large LED light cannons inside the museum that illuminate some 1,300 panes of glass in shifting colours – to mark the winter solstice.
“We wanted to lift people’s spirits by offering light at the end of a dark and difficult year with the pandemic,” said the museum's CEO Isha Khan. “The museum has been closed since Oct. 31 and, while we offer online programming, we still look for other ways to support and connect with our community.
“As Desmond Tutu once said: Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”
The display, which starts at dusk, continues daily until Jan. 9.
