Ontario Ceramics Artist Wins Winifred Shantz Award
Joon Hee Kim of Oakville, Ont., has won the $10,000 Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics.
The finalists are Grace Han, of Coquitlam, B.C., Magdolene Dykstra, of St. Catharines, Ont., Keeley Haftner, of Den Haag in the Netherlands, Toni Losey, of Dartmouth, N.S., and Jessica Sallay-Carrington, of Montreal.
All artists will be featured in an online group exhibition at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Ont., starting Sept. 11.
The Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics is supported by the Keith and Winifred Shantz Fund for the Arts, held at the Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation.
The award allows practicing early career ceramic artists to undertake a period of independent research or other activities to advance their practice.
Joon Hee Kim, a Canadian artist originally from Seoul, has a Master's degree from the Chelsea College of Arts in London. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including a solo exhibition at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery.
This year's award was juried by Michele Hardy, Anna-Marie Larsen and Maja Padrov.
“Kim capably synthesizes subject with masterful technique to produce engaging narratives about the ways ornament, beauty and heritage can frame a sense of self in a complicated world," the jury said.
She intends to use the prize for a residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan.
