A 17-year-old high school student in London, Ont., has won $100,000 in an art contest for her painting, Bittersweet.
Lara Denise Almagro won the People's Choice award in a competition organized by 100 Kellogg Lane, a company in London that's building an arts and culture hub in a building that once housed Kellogg Canada.
Almagro was up against 900 entries from around the world by both professional and amateur artists, the London Free Press reports.
Her painting shows two figures against a blue background, one with a dense thicket of flowers instead of a face.
It's the first time the Grade 12 student has entered an art contest.
Art is just a hobby for Almagro, who was born in the Philippines and moved to London three years ago. She hopes to study medicine and become a neurosurgeon.
