Courtenay-Comox, BC artist Peter Shostak has been elected to the College of Fellows of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. The honour recognizes Shostak's forty-year career as an artist and art professor in Canada.
The Society was created in 1929 to recognize accomplished Canadians including artists, geographers, scientists, anthropologists, business leaders, historians and educators. The Fellowship's lengthy list includes Calgary artist Chris Cran, The Group of Seven’s A.Y. Jackson, Winnipeg artist R.F.M. McInnis, author Margaret Atwood, and Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada.
Born and raised on a farm in northeastern Alberta, Shostak holds a graduate degree in art education from the University of Alberta. He was an associate professor of Art Education at the University of Victoria until 1979. He retired from teaching to pursue painting and silkscreen printing. His work has been shown across Canada and in 2003, he received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of his contributions to the country.
