Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the award of $200,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts through the New Chapters grant program towards the presentation of an ambitious public art project: Stages: Drawing the Curtain.
For this public art presentation, Plug In ICA will invite artists to work through out the city of Winnipeg to build sculptural stages. Artists from around the world will be asked to contemplate the stage – its function as a platform; its meaning as a point of attention and its physical design. The sculptural ‘stages’ will take many shapes and forms but each is intended to be platforms for audiences to occupy, physically engage and contemplate. With the aspiration that Stages will grow into a biennale public art exhibition, this first iteration will bring together local, Canadian, and International artists to activate the "stage" as a formal device for engaging audiences and to set art objects in motion.
In the first round of New Chapter’s awards, Plug In ICA is the only recipient in the province of Manitoba. Plug In ICA was one of 50 selected to receive funds out of the more than 500 applications to the New Chapters program. We look forward to presenting Stages: Drawing the Curtain in the Summer/Fall of 2017, as a reflection of the broader aims of our institutional mandate to support artists, put forward new modes of artistic production, and stimulate public conversation through art.
We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council and Winnipeg Arts Council. We thank the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for their support of our 2016 and 2017 program. And we extend our gratitude to our generous donors, valued members and dedicated volunteers.
