Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art receives international funding award from The Andy Warhol Foundation

Plug In ICA announced that The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has bestowed the organization with $80,000 USD to support artistic programming over the next two years. The prestigious Foundation based in New York City primarily funds American institutions, with a handful of notable international exceptions. Plug In ICA is pleased to be among them.

The Andy Warhol Foundation’s Program Director Rachel Bers writes:

With strong institutional support for the production, exhibition and critical consideration of experimental new work by artists, Plug In ICA is proving to be as vital a resource for artists as it was over 40 years ago – in fact more so, since it has the benefit of decades of experience and now the vision and energy of new director of programs, Jenifer Papararo. The  foundation’s grant acknowledges the important role Plug In continues to play as a platform for contemporary art discourse in Canada and beyond.  

Plug In ICA is one of a few Canadian institutes to receive funds from the American Foundation and this is our second award from them. In 2001, we received Andy Warhol Foundation funds for launching The Paradise Institute, a ground-breaking multimedia work by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller at the Venice Biennale. For the first and only time in history, Canadian artists won the Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion award.

The funds received from Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts begins with the support of this exhibition cycle, in which we present three concurrent exhibitions:

• Further Than I Can Throw A Stone, an international exhibition of provocative video and film,
• Moon Rehearsal Tape, a haunting sound and video installation by Aston Coles and Irene Bindi, and
• L’homelette, a dynamic site-specific installation by Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline.

We look forward to continuing to present exhibitions and programs that support artists, put forward new ways of production, and stimulate public conversation around art.
