Police Seize 1,000 Works from Victoria Art Dealer
Police seized more than 1,000 artworks worth millions of dollars during an investigation into an art dealer in Greater Victoria.
The seizure came after an April 11 complaint by someone who had consigned four paintings – three by Emily Carr and one by David Blackwood – but was unable to contact the owner when the gallery closed.
Police did not identify the dealer, but local media outlets say the case involves the new owner of Winchester Galleries.
CTV News quoted Anita Blackwood, who is married to David, as saying the couple have been seeking the return of his art since getting a letter from the previous owner saying the gallery had been sold.
Police located the 1,000 artworks at three storage sites. They are now being stored at a secure location.
"Investigators are currently preparing a report to Crown Counsel recommending criminal charges for multiple counts of fraud and false pretense," the police said.
“The dealer was taking art from people with the intention of consigning or appraising the art, later ceasing all contact, all the while selling the art without reimbursing the owners or artists.”
