Two Western Canadian art galleries, the Remai Modern in Saskatoon and the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver, have been awarded Governor General's Medals in Architecture.
The biennial awards, announced by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts, recognize excellence in recent projects built and designed by Canadian architects.
The two galleries were among 12 projects that represent a variety of buildings across Canada and beyond — from a natural swimming pool and a performance hall to libraries and a Baha'i temple.
The Remai Modern was designed and built by KPMB Architects and Architecture49, while the Polygon was a project of Patkau Architects.

The jury considered conceptual clarity, compatibility with the site, detailing, innovation, uniqueness and sustainable design.
The architectural institute is a national non-profit organization that has represented architects and architecture for more than 100 years.
