Donald Lawrence, "Comet MMXVIII," 2018
salvaged galvanized items and fluorescent light tubes, LED lights, bubble wrap, rope and tackle, 14.5' x 9' x 2.9'
A new work by Kamloops artist Donald Lawrence will be installed early next year at the entrance to a civic building shared by the Kamloops Library and the Kamloops Art Gallery.
Comet MMXVIII, a light sculpture, was created for the gallery’s recent Luminocity festival of video projections and new media projects.
Lawrence is a professor in the visual arts program at Thompson Rivers University and received the 2017 artist of the year award from the Kamloops mayor.
The sculpture draws on Lawrence’s interest in solar phenomenon and optical devices.
Lawrence currently leads the camera obscura project, a multi-year program of research funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
