Raj Sen Remembered by Open Space
The board and staff of Open Space, an artist-run centre in Victoria, are mourning executive director Raj Sen, who died March 7, surrounded by his family.
Sen, who joined Open Space in 2018, a difficult time in its history, is remembered for his leadership, kindness and strength of spirit as he brought the centre into a period of growth and stability.
“Raj has been an incredible and indescribable presence at Open Space,” said Charles Campbell, board chair of Open Space. “He took over at a time of tremendous change and in less than three years at the centre, started a new, inclusive and exciting chapter in the Open Space story. We will be forever grateful for his contribution.
"Raj’s generosity touched everyone he came in contact with. His ability to connect with people, the care he showed to others, and the pride he took in the successes of those around him are a few of the attributes that made him a loved and respected colleague and mentor. Raj was a bright and recognizable presence. He lit up the room with his quiet yet distinct sense of style, subtle wit, and a laugh that still warms my heart.”
Prior to joining Open Space, Sen spent five years working internationally, most recently as director of the Singapore branch of the Sundaram Tagore Gallery. In 2015, Sen helped realize a successful collateral event at the Venice Biennale.
Sen spent much of his youth in British Columbia, and studied art history at the University of Victoria.
He is survived by his wife, Angela, and his two children.
