Remai Modern appoints Director of Programs / Chief Curator

Sandra Guimarães

Portugese curator Sandra Guimarães has been appointed Director Programs/Chief Curator for Remai Modern.

"Sandra's experience is impressive. She has worked with many of Europe's leading artists and curators, has managed large curatorial projects and has been involved in the start up of new art institutions in Portugal,” said Gregory Burke, Executive Director and CEO of Remai Modern. “Her acute sensitivity to the work and ideas of artists is matched by a passion for the museum's role in elucidating the investigative and revelatory potential of art within the broader culture. This bodes well for the launch of Remai Modern.”

Guimarães’ curatorial and programming experience includes 11 years at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal, where she worked with many artists and curators including Thomas Hirschhorn and Vicente Todoli (founding Director of the Serralves Museum). She has also collaborated with the International Centre for the Arts José de Guimarães, European Capital of Culture 2012, Guimarães and with the Next Future Programme at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. Throughout her career she has organized, curated or co-curated internationally renowned exhibitions such as The 80’s: A Topology, cu-curated with Ulrich Looch with 72 well-known international artists, such as Thomas Schütte, Rosemarie Trockel, Rodney Graham, Marlene Dumas, Mona Hatoum, Luc Tuymans, Eugenio Dittborn, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall, Stan Douglas, Robert Gober, Tony Cragg and David Hammons among others.

Guimarães is currently curating an anthological exhibition of the work of Maria Nordman for HangarBicocca in Milan, Italy.

Guimarães is expected to join the Gallery’s leadership team in late summer 2015, pending approval from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Her appointment culminates a six-month international search involving discussions with many seasoned candidates and comes at an historic and defining moment in the lead up to the launch of Remai Modern.
