Remai Modern Drops Entry Fees
Saskatoon's Remai Modern is dropping entry fees starting Oct. 22.
The gallery will be open by donation for the next two decades, thanks to a $10-million donation from the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation.
"We have a gem in our city, we should all wear that with a lot of pride," said Ellen Remai. "I know that I am extremely proud."
The move comes after public consultations for a new strategic plan revealed barriers, both perceived and real, to visiting the gallery, including admission fees.
"This is an extraordinary gift to the people of Saskatoon and beyond," said Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh, the gallery's co-executive directors.
The recommended donation will be $10 for each adult, but any amount is welcome. Youth under 18 will continue to be free.
The donation comes atop several earlier pledges to the gallery, which opened in 2017. The largest – $31 million, included $16 million for the museum's construction and $15 million to support international exhibitions for 30 years. The foundation is also providing $1 million a year for the next 25 years to support purchases and will match eligible donations up to $1 million a year for 25 years.
Remai Modern is open Wednesday through Sunday. Visit the gallery's website for more information.
