Remai Modern announces a keynote lecture April 18 with Gerald McMaster, an internationally significant figure in contemporary Indigenous art. McMaster’s illustrated talk, Indigenous Views of the Other, presents works from all regions of Canada as well as the northern United States. These works explore the visual strategies Indigenous artists employ to represent the relationship with their European “other.”

“We’re delighted to present this important lecture by Saskatchewan-born Gerald

McMaster, a leading international figure in contemporary Indigenous art,” said Gregory

Burke, Remai Modern Executive Director & CEO. “The event is part of our Museums 3.0

series, bringing thought leaders to lead workshops with gallery staff as a means of

informing our direction-setting programs.

“This public lecture is an opportunity to engage a wider audience, and to signal Remai

Modern’s ongoing and ramped-up commitment to contemporary Indigenous art

practices.”

A groundbreaking curator, author, artist, and educator, McMaster is professor of

Indigenous Visual Culture and Critical Curatorial Studies at OCAD University (Toronto),

where he is Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Visual Culture & Curatorial Practice.

Born near North Battleford, SK, McMaster is Plains Cree/Member of the Siksika First

Nation. He has held curatorial positions at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Art

Gallery of Ontario, and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. In

2006, he was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada. His championing of the

mainstream value of Indigenous art throughout his career has led to his roles as

Canadian Commissioner for the 1995 Venice Biennale, and artistic director of the 2012

Biennale of Sydney. McMaster is currently collaborating on three major projects in

Europe, South America, and Australia.
