Royal BC Museum Consults Public on Its Future
The Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria is launching a public-engagement process this month to talk about the institution's future.
The move comes after then-premier John Horgan announced, then cancelled, a $789-million renovation that would have closed the museum for seven years.
Some critics argued it would be better to spend the money on tackling pressing issues in the province related to housing and health care.
The troubled museum has faced complaints of racism from Indigenous staff and controversy over plans to decolonize some displays, including a popular pioneer village.
The museum's chief executive, Alicia Dubois, will lead sessions aimed at connecting with municipalities, Indigenous communities, cultural groups, business organizations, post-secondary institutions and others.
The engagement process is expected to take three years, and will include consultations in Victoria and other parts of the province.
