Royal Ontario Museum Returns Chief Poundmaker's Pipe, Saddlebag
The Royal Ontario Museum returned Chief Poundmaker's ceremonial pipe and saddle bag to his descendants at a ceremony in Toronto this week.
Poundmaker, a 19th-century Plains Cree chief, was part of negotiations that led to Treaty 6, which covers parts of present-day Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Some of his belongings ended up in museum collections after the North-West Resistance of 1885.
In 2019, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau exonerated the chief, who was convicted of treason for leading his warriors in battle against Canadian forces.
Poundmaker's family is seeking the return of his belongings from various museums.
