The Rozsa Foundation, a philanthropic group that supports the arts in Alberta, has launched a campaign to double provincial spending on the arts over the next three years to $51 million.
"We're calling for Alberta voters to send a letter to the leaders of all Alberta political parties, stressing the importance of funding the arts," the foundation says.
The campaign comes as Albertans prepare to head to the polls on May 29.
The foundation says it takes less than a minute for arts lovers to send their views to politicians.
Here's how it works:
- Text ARTS (not case-sensitive) to 587-875-5751.
- You will receive an automated text in return with a link to the Vote Arts Alberta website.
- On this site, you will find a pre-written letter, which you can edit as you wish.
- Fill in the required information – your name, email and postal code – and hit enter.
It says the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, which supports numerous arts organizations, has been chronically underfunded, even as the provincial budget, population and rate of inflation has grown over the last 14 years.
"The arts sector in Alberta has been expected to serve more people at a higher cost of business with less funding," says the Rozsa Foundation.
It says a doubled budget would account for less than one tenth of one percent of the province's proposed budget.
