SAAG Arts Writing Prize Competition Details Announced

Details for this year's SAAG Arts Writing Prize competition have been released. 

Categories for the 2024 competition include Arts Writing and the Aruna D’Souza Award for BIPOC Writers. Those interested are encouraged to enter original works on contemporary art, including but not limited to exhibition reviews, critical essays and more. Experimental and innovative approaches to writing will also be considered.

The deadline to enter is March 30. 

Winners will receive $1,000 plus a $500 public program opportunity with the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, and may also have the opportunity for an art writing mentorship. Runners-up will each receive $250.

Everyone who submits will be eligible to have their work published in the 2024 SAAG Arts Writing Prize Reader, created by SAAG’s Tiny Press, and each person who enters the competition will receive a free copy of the anthology. 

“This prize aims to recognize and support emerging writers whose writing relates to the field of art,” according to the news release. 

“Art writing is essential to supporting a healthy art ecosystem, providing access points for contemporary art practice, engaging different voices in the field, and encouraging and developing discourse in the visual arts.”
