Prestigious jury shortlisted works from over 1,300 submissions…
The Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP) announced that 52 artists from across Canada have been selected as finalists for Canada’s newest National Art Prize. Chosen from over 800 artists and 1,367 works, these artists will contend for $25,000 in prize money and have an opportunity to elevate their careers by gleaning exposure and valuable industry recognition. The inaugural Salt Spring National Art Prize has a mandate of encouraging artists whose work demonstrates a visual impact and a depth of meaning.
"For our first Finalist Exhibition we are extremely pleased with the number and quality of work submitted by artists from across the country,” said SSNAP founding director Ronald T. Crawford. “The work chosen from over 800 artists and 1,367 works, successfully reflects our goals of showing the strength and diversity of Canadian art while encouraging dialogue and exposure for the 52 featured artists. The jury selected works blind to any geographical, cultural or gender information; this has given us an amazing cross section of works for our exhibition. I applaud the integrity of work from all the artists who have submitted, and congratulate the finalists and respect the decisions made by our jury."
The prestigious jury, made up of contemporary curator, Vicky Chainey Gagnon (St. John’s. NL), artists/art instructors, Holger Kalberg (Winnipeg, MB) and Ian Thomas (Salt Spring Island, BC) was blind to the identity of the artists, and selected artists from communities that reflect the diversity of the geographical regions of Eastern, Central, Western Canada, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, and the Northern Territories as noted below:

The submissions consist of 15 three-dimensional works, 7 photographs, 17 paintings, 2 prints, 2 drawings and 10 mixed media.
The images of the finalists’ works will be represented in a catalogue, unveiled and presented for sale on the opening of the exhibit on September 25, 2015.
SSNAP Key Dates:

October 24 – Prize announcement and awards ceremony
October 26 – Exhibition closes
Salt Spring National Art Prize Awards as follows:
Best in Show receives the Joan McConnell Award of $10,000, plus a Salt Spring artists residency to the value of $5,000.
Juror's Choice Awards, three awards of $1,000 selected by each juror.
ASA Award (Alliance of Salt Spring Artists) $1,000 for best Salt Spring artist.
Rosemarie Behncke People's Choice Awards with a 1st Prize of $3,000, 2nd Prize of $2,000 and 3rd Prize of $1,000.
About SSNAP:
To recognize, showcase and publicize the accomplishments of Canadian visual art, Salt Spring Island, BC has established the Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP), one of the few national, juried competitions in the country. In this inaugural year, SSNAP will be offering $25,000 worth of awards, to be chosen by an independent jury from across Canada. This exciting endeavour is an initiative of the Salt Spring Arts Council, which represents the arts for Salt Spring Island, one of Canada’s premier arts communities. Original works will be exhibited and for sale at historic Mahon Hall from September 25 through to October 26, 2015.
