The Salt Spring National Art Prize has selected 52 finalists from a total of 1,608 artists who submitted their work to the national contest. The finalists are eligible for 10 awards worth a total of $41,000.
“It is especially gratifying to see the great response we had to our call by artists during this last very difficult year and how many referenced the effects of the pandemic,” says Ronald T. Crawford, founding director of the prize.
Finalists' work will be included in an exhibition from Sept. 24 to Oct. 25 at Mahon Hall, on Salt Spring Island, B.C.
The 10 awards include the $20,000 Joan McConnell award and residency, four $3,000 jurors' choice awards, four people's choice awards ranging from $3,000 to $1,000, and a $2,000 award for best work by an artist who lives on Salt Spring island.
Canadians can vote for the people's choice awards online in September.
