Saskatchewan Legislative Building Artist-in-Residence Program
As part of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building 100th Anniversary celebration, eight Saskatchewan artists have the unique opportunity to explore the history and significance of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building through their own artistic practice involving two components, community-engagement and a permanent legacy artwork. The artistic inspiration for both residency components is the vision, construction and reality of the Legislative Building, a building that represents the character, ambitions and spirit of Saskatchewan people.
The community-engaged focus of the residency project sees each artist in-residence at the Legislative Building for two consecutive weeks. The artist will host collaborative art making opportunities encouraging participation and cultural exchange. The legacy artwork component of the program gives each artist several months to create a work of art that will be permanently displayed in a designated alcove in the rotunda area of the Legislative Building. The unveiling of all artworks is scheduled for December 5, 2012.

On March 12, 2012 Minister Bill Hutchinson announced plans for an artist-in-residence program as part of the province's year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building. The program has been developed in partnership with the Saskatchewan Arts Board.
Laura Hale has accepted the position of artist co-ordinator and will begin work today to develop the residency program and will oversee the program until it's conclusion in December. The program will consist of short residencies with different guest artists and will ultimately result in one legacy artwork or display for each of the eight alcoves in the Rotunda of the Legislative Building. Hale and the selected artists will be provided space in the Legislative Building in which to work as well as carry out public engagement activities and youth art initiatives
