The Winnipeg Art Gallery is the first Canadian art institution to exhibit work at the Senate of Canada as part of a new program, Museums at the Senate.
“We have a big responsibility to make sure we are hearing Canadian voices,” Senator Patricia Bovey says in an article on the Senate's website. "The visual arts, dance and music are international languages. These artworks are important voices.”
The Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq will display a group of prints by Inuit artists like Kenojuak Ashevak and Pitaloosie Saila.
“Works from past and present Inuit artists will hopefully open viewers up to the stories of Inuit,” the gallery’s curator of Inuit art, Darlene Coward Wight, says in the same article.
One of the eight featured artists is Andrew Qappik, who designed Nunavut’s flag.
