The Sobey Art Award is removing the age restriction from its prestigious prize, opening the competition to emerging artists of any age.
Previously, the award was given only to artists aged 40 and under.
It's the second major change in recent weeks to the contest, which earlier announced a boost in the cash prize for the 20 artists on the long list from $2,000 to $10,000.
The overall winner receives $100,000, and the four other artists on the short list each receive $25,000.
The award is jointly administered by the Sobey Art Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada.
An independent jury of curators from five regions (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies/North and West Coast/Yukon), as well as two international jurors, will oversee this year's competition.
An exhibition by the five artists on the short list will be held at the National Gallery in the fall.
Nominations will be accepted until 6 p.m. on March 19, 2021.
