Splash of Colour in Lower Lonsdale
In a back alley near 3rd Street & Lonsdale Avenue, a group of youth have been transforming an old wall into a painted mural full of colour and history
Studio in the City is a youth employment program funded by the City of North Vancouver that has been responsible for many creative interventions around the city over the last 11 years, including the rain art labyrinth at City Hall Plaza and last summer's Fun Alley transformation.
The program runs annually and provides local artists aged 15 to 19 with opportunities to make an impact in their community and work alongside experienced mentors, often up-and-coming artists. The North Vancouver Community Arts Council is managing the project this year, working with artistic director and lead artist Mark Ollinger.
This year, students painted a mural on the side of the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans of Canada, Unit #45 building at 3rd Street just off Lonsdale. The building has been in the Lower Lonsdale community for almost 100 years.
The Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans is Canada's oldest veteran's association. Members have served in wars and peacekeeping missions.
"This design aims to keep true to veterans who have served our country and to what the organization stands for," says Ollinger.
The unveiling is Aug. 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
