Stéphane Aquin’s appointment as director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has been extended
Stéphane Aquin’s appointment as the director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has been extended for another three years, the museum’s board has announced.
"When Stéphane Aquin began his first term in 2020, in the midst of the global pandemic, he found himself at the head of a museum undergoing significant internal changes and operating within a cultural environment that was itself fast evolving,” said André Dufour, chair of the museum’s board of trustees. “Nevertheless, he managed to solidify our institution's foundation on several fronts, thus proving his mettle in guiding the museum towards a thriving future.”
Aquin had replaced Nathalie Bondil, who left the museum to return to France amid controversy over her management style.
Before his current job, Aquin was chief curator of the Smithsonian Institution's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. Before that he had served 16 years as contemporary art curator at the Montreal museum.
