Vancouver's Stephen Waddell is the winner of the ninth annual Scotiabank Photography Award.
Waddell receives a $50,000 cash prize and a solo exhibition at next year's Contact photography festival in Toronto. As well, a book of his work will be published and distributed worldwide by Steidl, a German art book publisher.
Two finalists, Shannon Bool and Althea Thauberger, each receive cash prizes of $10,000.
"Stephen's refined photographic explorations evoke his keen awareness about the poetics of space and the history of painting, while also walking the line between documentary and intimately personal visualizations." said photographer Edward Burtynsky, the jury's chair.
The award, founded in 2010, recognizes the achievements of established artists and strives to accelerate their careers toward the next level of national and international recognition.
Previous winners are Moyra Davey, Shelley Niro, Suzy Lake, Angela Grauerholz, Mark Ruwedel, Stan Douglas, Arnaud Maggs and Lynne Cohen.
Davey's exhibition is on view at the Ryerson Image Centre until Aug. 4.
