Steven McNeil Moves Up to Chief Curator at Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
Steven McNeil , who joined the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria as the curator of historical and Canadian art last fall, has been promoted to chief curator, effective immediately.
McNeil will also be the gallery's director of collections and exhibitions, gallery director Nancy Noble announced Thursday.
He replaces former chief curator, Jamie Isaac, who joined the gallery in 2021 after working as Indigenous and contemporary art curator at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
McNeil, a specialist in Canadian art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, has 15 years of experience at various institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada, the National Capital Commission and the University of Toronto.
"I look forward to developing ambitious exhibitions, to bringing in new acquisitions and to leading the team that cares for and presents the AGGV's renowned collections," he said.
At the National Gallery, McNeil worked on various exhibitions including: Emily Carr: New Perspectives and Artists, Architects, Artisans: Canadian Art, 1890-1918. He also worked on Art of this Land, the first presentation of Indigenous and Canadian historical art in the National Gallery's permanent collection galleries.
At the National Capital Commission, McNeil was the lead curator for the presentation of art and historical artefacts within the state rooms of Rideau Hall.
McNeil holds a master's degree in Canadian art history from Carleton University in Ottawa and a bachelor's degree in Canadian history from the University of New Brunswick.
