The Ontario Heritage Trust – in partnership with the RBC Foundation – has converted famed artist, writer, educator and conservationist Doris McCarthy's home, lovingly called Fool's Paradise, into an Artist-in-Residence Centre where professional visual artists, musicians and writers can apply to live and work. Each artist selected for the program will live in the centre for one to three months.
Doris McCarthy designed and built the house and studio herself on a stunning site atop the Scarborough Bluffs, with expansive vistas overlooking Lake Ontario. The property is an expression of McCarthy’s creativity and character.
The Ontario Heritage Trust recognizes the importance of supporting contemporary Canadian artists. The Centre embraces the multi-disciplinary nature of the arts and fosters excellence among these artists, musicians and writers.
2015 marks the first year of the Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence program.
The following talented Canadian artists have already completed their residencies:
- Kate Wilson – painter from Toronto, Ontario
- Jan Coates – children’s author from Wolfville, Nova Scotia
- Gerald Hill – writer/poet from Regina, Saskatchewan
- Lydia Adams – choral musician and composer from Caledon East, Ontario
- Todd Stewart – printmaker from Montreal, Quebec
- Hussein Janmohamed – singer, composer and conductor from Coquitlam, British Columbia
