The Manitoba Craft Council and the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library recently announced the opening of the new C2 CENTRE FOR CRAFT
As announced in June 2016, the Manitoba Craft Council and the Manitoba Craft Museum and Library officially opened their shared space on October 28, 2017 as the C2 Centre for Craft.
It includes:
C2 CENTRE FOR CRAFT RETAIL SHOP
The C2 Shop will feature work by professional, local craftspeople. A perfect place to shop for original, high-quality handmade items!
EXHIBITION GALLERY
best, a juried exhibition of contemporary craft accompanied by a curated selection of work from the MCML’s historic collection, is the inaugural show at C2's Shirley Richardson Craft Gallery running until November 18. The gallery will feature 6-8 exhibitions of traditional and contemporary craft per year.
MCML MUSEUM GALLERY
Our Manitoba: Provincial Symbolism in Craft showcases craft work that has been influenced by or is associated with Manitoban themes. Elements that contribute to Manitoba’s imagery include plant and animal life, the Red River Settlement, the cultures of Indigenous, Métis and Immigrant peoples as well as the landscape of the Arctic, Canadian Shield, and grasslands. Whether it’s the province’s official flower, a typical prairie scene of grain elevators, or a Northern mainstay like the polar bear, each piece on display exemplifies something that is inextricably linked to Manitoba’s imagery.
MCML LIBRARY
The MCML library collection was initially developed to provide resource material for courses and workshops at the Guild, and has grown to include historical texts, “how-to” manuals, patterns, contemporary books, and general theory books on design and colour. The library is a unique collection containing materials dating back as far as the late 19th century, some foreign language books and recently published books and periodicals. A significant portion of the holdings are unique in Canada. The collection is accessible to everyone for on-site research, with borrowing privileges available to MCML members.
WORKSHOP SPACE
The C2 Workshop Space will focus on education and the passing on of fine craft skills. Craft is hands on - it invites participation. Classes will begin in early 2018, with course offerings being announced soon.
