The Vancouver Art Gallery explores transformation and change in The Metamorphosis, an exhibition of contemporary art from the gallery’s collection.
On view from Nov. 24 to March 17, it includes artists Sonny Assu, Beau Dick, Lyse Lemieux, Marianne Nicolson, Skeena Reece, Fiona Tan, Wang Jianwei.
“The Metamorphosis ties together provocative themes and ideas of change undertaken in more than 40 remarkable contemporary works,” says Kathleen Bartels, the gallery's director.
The show's title was inspired by Franz Kafka’s 1915 novella, which follows the experience of a man who finds himself transformed into a giant insect.
Some artists in the show physically alter the appearance of their materials, while others repurpose everyday objects in evocative ways. There are also works that suggest a movement between different realms or states of altered consciousness and spiritual transcendence.
The show is curated by senior curator Bruce Grenville, assistant curator Emmy Lee Wall and Tarah Hogue, senior Indigenous fellow.
