The Salt Spring National Art Prize Society announces awards
Salt Spring National Art Prize 2023 winners
Ottawa artist Sarah-Mecca Abdourahman won the $20,000 Joan McConnell Award, the top prize for 2023-24 from the Salt Spring National Art Prize Society. The artist’s winning painting, Sambuza After School, explores the experiences of residing in a country far from home.
The Salt Spring National Art Prize Residency, valued at $6,000, was given to Lynn Kodeih of Montreal.
Four $4,000 Jurors’ Choice Awards were given. The recipients are Martin Blanchet, of St-Emile-de-Suffolk, Que.; Rydel Cerezo, of Surrey, B.C.; Daniel Labutes, of Medicine Hat, Alta.; and Bruce van Slyke, of Burnaby, B.C.
Among the Peoples’ Choice Awards, the top prize of $3,500 went to Maureen O’Connor, of Toronto; the second prize of $2,500 went to Cheyenne Rain LeGrande, of Edmonton; the $1,000 third prize went to Katy Biele, of Victoria; and the $1,000 Youth Vote went to David Shepherd, of Hamilton, Ont.
