Threatened Edmonton Gallery Given One-Year Reprieve
Harcourt House, an Edmonton artist-run centre that's under threat of closure, says it has received another one-year lease extension from the Alberta government.
The extension, to Nov. 30, 2024, gives the society that runs the centre more time to raise the $3.5 million it needs to purchase the building from the province.
In June, the society received a $100,000 donation from the Flanagan Foundation in Calgary. It says it is also seeking funding from the Alberta government, which would allow it to seek matching funding from the federal government.
The society said in a statement that Harcourt House, which includes galleries and artist studios, encourages artists to remain in Edmonton, where they contribute to the province's cultural and economic vibrancy.
The gallery was given a one-year reprieve last fall after the government refused to renew Harcourt House's lease.
A campaign on the GoFundMe crowdfunding platform designed to demonstrate grassroots community support has raised about $56,000 of its $70,000 goal.
