Three Canadian artists – Ken Lum, Sandra Brewster and Chris Curreri – are finalists for this year's Scotiabank Photography Award, one of Canada's most prestigious prizes for lens-based art.
The award, created in 2010 by Toronto photographer Edward Burtynsky in partnership with the bank, helps propel senior artists to greater international awareness.
The winner, to be announced May 4, receives a $50,000 cash prize, a solo exhibition at the Toronto Image Centre during next year's Contact photography festival and a book about their work by Steidl, a German art publisher.
The other two finalists each receive a cash prize of $10,000.
"This year's finalists represent exceptional perspective, innovation and creativity within the photographic medium," said Burtynsky.
Burtynsky chairs the jury, which also includes Stéphane Aquin, director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; Kenneth Montague, a Toronto art collector and curator; and Gaëlle Morel, exhibition curator at the Toronto Image Centre.
Lorna Bauer, Krista Bell Stewart, Genevieve Cadieux, Rosalie Favell and Ned Pratt were on the long list of eight artists.
Last year's winner, Jin-me Yoon, will have a solo exhibition at the Toronto Image Centre from April 29 to Aug. 5.
