The Hnatyshyn Foundation has awarded its annual William and Meredith Saunderson Prizes for Emerging Artists to Lan “Florence” Yee, Maggy Hamel-Metsos and Shaya Ishaq.
Yee is a visual artist based in Toronto and Montreal, who has created work related to diasporic anxiety and migrant silence.
Hamel-Metsos works in sculpture and is the 2021 Quebec recipient of the BMO 1st Art! Prize.
Ishaq, an interdisciplinary artist, writer and designer interested craft, diaspora and anthropology, often works with textiles and clay to make wearable art and jewelry.
Each artist receives $5,000.
Portfolios were evaluated by Michelle Jacques, chief curator of the Remai Modern in Saskatoon, and Hajra Waheed, a multidisciplinary artist.
