Through the Lens Returns to Bow Valley
Through the Lens coordinator Nic Latulippe introduces high school students to photography processes.
The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies and the Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation have announced the return of the Through the Lens photography program to Alberta.
Former participants Nic Latulippe and Soloman Chiniquay have returned to lead the initiative.
The pilot program is on now through to the end of March 2024 and will include 30 students from three schools in the region. Participants were selected through a lottery system.
The Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation donated $35,000 to use toward equipment and to help support construction of darkrooms.
“The initiative enables students throughout the Bow Valley to make a record of their life and the world around us — providing a visual narrative for years to come,” said Cathy Geisler, the foundation’s executive director.
“Originally launched in 1997 by renowned photographer Craig Richards, Through the Lens was widely recognized for its immersive approach to film photography and darkroom processes,” according to the news release.
The program was designed to ignite visual literacy and creativity in students living in Alberta’s Bow Valley Corridor, a region that includes Banff, Canmore, Kananaskis, Lake Louise and more.
More than 600 students participated in the program between 1997 and 2017.
“Through the Lens was instrumental in the artistic development of students throughout the Bow Valley for 20 years and everyone at the Whyte is excited to see it return,” said Donna Livingstone, the Whyte Museum’s CEO.
“From the exhibits to the publications, the entire community played a role in one way or other, and we look forward to seeing the next generation take part in it.”
