Thunder Bay Art Gallery Hits Spiralling Costs
The Thunder Bay Art Gallery has launched a $5-million fundraising drive to offset the rising cost of its new waterfront art gallery, now under construction.
"We know that many people in the community are eager to support the construction of this beautiful new building because they understand the extensive benefits to the city," said campaign chair Shelley Crawford.
A community campaign five years ago raised $2.7 million, but the gallery, like other construction projects across Canada, is facing rising costs due to the pandemic and inflation.
The gallery secured $47.5 million from all levels of government toward the original project cost of $50 million.
The new gallery, more than double the size of the existing facility on the campus of Confederation College, includes more exhibition space and a larger storage vault for the permanent collection.
Originally expected to open in 2019, it is now slated for completion in 2025.
